Hanff (pronounced "HANF") was born in Germany and was educated at the University of Heidelberg and New York's Columbia University. She earned her master's degree from Columbia University's Teachers College, and then taught English as a Second Language at Hunter College for twenty-seven years. In 1978 she left teaching to write her book, 84 Charing Cross Road, which became a best-seller. It was adapted into a successful stage play, produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, and a film version followed in 1987.
